advocating Interstate 69 through Kentucky

I-69 Status

Through Kentucky, I-69 is divided into three Segments of Independent Utility (SIUs):

I69 Segments of Independent Utility Map

SIU4

Primarily the new Ohio River Bridge and six miles of new highway to connect to the Pennyrile Parkway south of Henderson, the approximate cost is $1.4 billion. Environmental work is needed on SIU4 to move it forward.

SIU5

This section involves upgrading the Pennryile and Western Kentucky parkways from Henderson to Eddyville. A scoping study completed in 2006 found the price for upgrades to be $145-$450 million depending on the level of upgrades that are eventually required by the U.S. DOT.

SIU6

This section runs from Eddyville south to Fulton at the TN border. The state is currently conducting a scoping study to determine the upgrade costs to the Purchase Parkway.

2010 Update

  • In early February, Governor Steve Beshear and KYTC released the proposed 2010-2016 road plan and it includes seven projects for I-69 totaling nearly $29M. This is the first time I-69 would be included in the Kentucky Road Plan.

2009 Update

  • Last winter, Congressman Ed Whitfield requested $644,900,000 for I-69 in Kentucky in the federal highway reauthorization bill.
  • In June, the Kentucky General Assembly approved an infrastructure authority bill to allow the I-69 and Louisville bridges to be built with alternative financing— most likely tolls.
  • Also in June, the state transportation cabinet announced it would use some of its SAFETEA-LU appropriation to conduct a scoping study on SIU6 to determine upgrade costs.
  • On August 4th, Governor Steve Beshear announced that retired highway district engineer Ted Merryman would be project manager for I-69.
